Service Learning

Located in the heart of midtown Toronto, Â鶹ÊÓƵ has close connections with the broader Toronto community.
Students strengthen these connections through weekly community outreach and community-building programs. Through these service learning programs, our students gain first-hand understanding of how certain social issues can impact members of our community differently, and see how getting involved in their community can make a positive impact.

Our goal is to help students appreciate the value of giving because they want to, not because they have to. While all students in Ontario must complete at least 40 hours of service to graduate from high school, many Â鶹ÊÓƵ students proudly claim hours far beyond that minimum. Though participation in the service learning program is only required in Grades 7 and 8, the majority of students carry on their involvement throughout high school.

    • Our goal is to help students appreciate the value of giving and the importance of empathy.

Our Programs

Here's a sample of the service learning programs Â鶹ÊÓƵ offers:
  • Hockey HEROS: Â鶹ÊÓƵ students work with younger students from schools in Regent Park, helping them to develop their hockey skills while acting as supports on and off the ice.
  • Leacock Foundation: We provide volunteers for several programs run by the Leacock Foundation: Saturday Morning Club, LEAP into Leadership and March Break Literacy Camp.
  • Lescon After School: This after-school club program brings students and volunteers together to play, learn and build relationships at this small public school in North York.
  • Reading Buddies: Our Grade 7 and 8 students travel to Davisville Public School to engage in a literacy program with primary school students.
  • Sandwich Sisters: Supporting a grassroots community organization that aims to provide healthy lunches to those in vulnerable sectors, students work in a Sandwich Pod to create lunches for the Toronto Council Fire Native Cultural Centre.
  • Sprucecourt @ Â鶹ÊÓƵ: Working at Â鶹ÊÓƵ, students in this program participate in an 8-week block of programming. Activities include cooperative games, STEM activities, art and theatre. Students lead stations/activities and help support the learning and exploration of Sprucecourt Public School students.
  • Sprucecourt Peer-to-Peer: Â鶹ÊÓƵ students provide peer-to-peer learning support in Maths and English in Sprucecourt Public School Grade 4 and 5 classrooms on Wednesday mornings.
  • Youth Without Shelter Brown Bag Lunches: Supporting a youth shelter in Etobicoke, students work weekly to create healthy brown-bagged lunches. Participants create meal plans, make lunches and learn more about food insecurity in the city.
"I loved raising awareness for childhood cancer. I really do care about Childhood Cancer Canada and the kids it supports, so I wanted to help make [the program] the best it can be. How the school facilitates opportunities for kids to get involved in the community is really amazing.”

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
